Diplomats' Rally Falls Short

LANCASTER, Pa – Franklin & Marshall rallied from an eight-points deficit in the second half to get within one point, but Eastern Mennonite converted nine-of-10 free throws in the final three minutes to earn a 65-58 win in the consolation game of the Terry Greene Memorial Tournament Saturday.

The Diplomats fell to 1-2 while the Lady Royals earned their first win this season and improved to 1-2.

After trailing 33-31 at halftime, F&M used an 10-2 run to lead 43-37 with 15:45 left in the game. Alexa Barbush netted eight points during the run, and Elizabeth Snyder added a layup, for F&M. EMU rallied to tie the game at 43-43 with buckets from Sara Lamneck, Danielle Rittenhouse and Kala Yoders.

F&M took its final lead of the game on Allison Bauer's layup at 7:55 to go ahead 48-47. The Royals scored nine straight points, three by Yoders and six from Kori Penick, to lead 56-48 with 4:59 left in the game.

The Diplomats cut the deficit to one 56-55, with 3:00 left, before EMU converted nine free throws in the remainder of the contest to seal the win.

Barbush scored a game-high 20 points for the Diplomats and pulled down five rebounds. Bauer added 11 points off of the bench and Snyder finished with 10 points. Amy Chabitnoy grabbed a team-high six boards.

Four players finished with double digits for EMU. Rittenhouse paced the Royals with 15 points with Yoders (13 points), Steph Rheinheimer (12) and Penick (10) rounding out the scoring. Lamneck finished with a game-high 10 rebounds for EMU while Bianca Ygarza and Yoders pulled down eight boards each.

The Diplomats return to the court Tuesday when they host Bryn Mawr in their Centennial Conference opener at 6 p.m.
