York (Pa.) Downs Hobert in Season Opener

YORK, PA – The York College men's basketball team made some clutch plays late to hold off Hobart 65-59 in the opener for both squads on Saturday in Wolf Gymnasium.
The Spartans got a huge three pointer from Tate Landis off a scramble play with just under three minutes to give York some breathing room as they were able to close out the game.
The Spartans are now 1-0 overall while the Statesmen fall to 0-1.

How It Happened
• The Statesmen opened the game by outscoring York 13-7 over the first five minutes of the contest. The Spartans fashioned a 17-3 run that covered 7:42 as the Green and White took a 24-16 lead. Jayden RowePat Gilhool, and Nick Schroeder each had a three on the run. In fact, the Spartans had seven different players score on the spurt. The Statesmen responded by scoring 10 of the final 16 points of the half, trimming their halftime deficit to 30-26.
• York opened the second half with a pair of Rowe triples which quickly pushed the Spartan lead to ten just 49 seconds out of the intermission. The threes started a 12-5 run as the Spartans had an 11-point lead just over four minutes into the half.
• Hobart kept chipping away at the Spartan lead but York pushed their advantage back to 11 on a Gilhool lay-up. The Spartan then built the lead to a game-high 15 at 56-41 with 9:49 left. However, the Spartans went ice cold from the field as Hobart scored 12 of the next 13 points, slicing the York lead to four with 3:59 left in the game. Tate Landis hit a huge three off a scramble with 2:46 left to push the lead back to seven. That triple started a quick 6-0 spurt that increased the Spartan lead back to ten with 1:23 left. After a Monty Nedd lay-up for Hobart, Jackson Mascari hit two free throws with 56 seconds left to put York up ten. The Statesmen scored the final four points of the game but they ran out of time as the Spartans picked up the season opening win.
