MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College lost a double overtime thriller to Otterbein University by the score of 90-88 Wednesday (Feb. 7) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference men's basketball action. The Pioneers fall to 14-8 overall and 8-7 in the OAC. Otterbein improves to 15-7 on the season and 9-6 in the OAC.
Otterbein used a 13-2 run in the second half to erase a 10-point Marietta lead. Jack Clement hit a pair of three-pointers and Reece Huber capped the run with a layup at the 4:46 mark to give the Cardinals a 66-65 lead.
Marietta responded with a three-pointer from Frank Waganfeald and two free throws from Sahmi Willoughby to retake the lead. But a bucket from Chase Garito and another triple from Clement gave Otterbein a 73-70 lead with 49 seconds left in regulation.
With 28 seconds left, Jake Singleton tied the game with a three-pointer. Otterbein's chance for the win in regulation was swatted away when Ethan Andersen blocked a layup attempt from Cam Evans as time ran out in the second half with the game tied, 73-73.
Marietta scored the first seven points in overtime as Waganfeald scored on a layup and a three-pointer and Danny Flood hit a jumper. The Pioneers led by nine points, 84-75, after Willoughby sank a pair of free throws with 1:34 left in the first overtime.
Otterbein hot three straight triples to tie the game, 84-84, with one second left on the clock. Julian Heckman started the run and Clement nailed two more three-pointers sending the game into a second extra period.
All of the points scored in the second overtime period were scored in the first two minutes. Neither team scored in the final 3:05 of the game. A layup from Garito at the 3:05 mark was the difference in the game and gave Otterbein the 90-88 victory.
Willoughby led five Pioneers in double figures with 21 points. He completed the double-double with 13 rebounds. Waganfeald and Flood scored 16 points each, while David Sanford and Singleton added 11 points each.
Clement led all scorers with 26 points. He connected on six three-pointers in the game and led Otterbein with none rebounds. Garito finished with 17 points and eight boards. Cam Evans and Julian Heckman added 15 and 12 points, respectively. Alex Hannah chipped in with 11 points.
Marietta plays at No. 1 ranked John Carroll University on Saturday (Feb. 10). Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
