FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Junior Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) equaled his career-high with 22 points, adding a season-high 11 rebounds for his third double-double this season, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 79-66 non-conference basketball decision on the road at the University of Mary Washington on Tuesday night in Fredericksburg. Junior DJ Wright (Greensboro, GA) added a season-high 21 points off the bench for the visiting Tigers (2-3), who trailed 40-23 at halftime. Dorian Davis scored a game-high 24 points off the bench for the host Eagles (4-0), who defeated H-SC for the first time since 1987.

"We are really struggling to find our rhythm right now and we are not playing together as a result," said fourth-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "We have a lot to clean up, and we will going into ODAC play."

H-SC took an early 2-0 lead following a basket inside by Hubbard at 19:44, but UMW responded with eight-straight points, before senior Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA) connected on a three-point field goal at 15:44 to make it 8-5. The Eagles scored six unanswered points to lead 14-5 at 14:01, before Hubbard scored inside once-again to close the margin to 14-7 at 12:42, and Hubbard would go on to add seven more quick points, including a three-pointer, as the Tigers trailed just 18-14 at 8:36. A three-pointer off the bench by Wright had the visitors within 22-17 with 7:35 left in the half, but the hosts closed on an 18-6 run to lead 40-23 at halftime.

UMW continued its run to start the second half, taking its largest lead of the contest at 47-25 with 16:35 remaining. H-SC, however, started battling back and scored eight-straight points toward a 14-3 run to close to within 50-39 at 11:34—getting a pair of three-pointers off the bench from sophomore Ayman McGowan (Memphis, TN), as well as another three-pointer by Wright. The Eagles pushed their advantage to 57-39 at 9:41, but the Tigers answered back with eight-straight points, including two more three-pointers from Wright, to close to within 57-47 with 7:33 on the clock. The hosts led 70-55 at 3:44, and secured the outcome with 9-14 free throws over the final 3:05, including 4-6 after a late three-pointer by Hubbard provided the final points for the Garnet & Grey.
