ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) led all scorers with 26 points, and junior Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) had his sixth double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds, as the top-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team outscored Lynchburg 45-25 in the second half in an 84-65 ODAC victory on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened:

  • Anthony nailed a pair of three-pointers as the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 10-0 lead three minutes into the contest. The Hornets used a 22-4 spurt to go up 22-14 with 11:45 left in the first half. Sophomore Will Coble (Charlotte, N.C./Davidson Day) and junior Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) hit consecutive treys to pull R-MC within two at 22-20 midway through the period. Lynchburg built the lead back to eight at 37-29 with 4:30 remaining. The Yellow Jackets trailed 40-34 before a jumper by sophomore Lance Johnson (South Riding, Va./Freedom) with two minutes left and a triple by Anthony with three seconds remaining made it a one-point game at intermission. Anthony had 15 points in the first half.
  • Anthony hit a jumper, Talbert made a layup and senior David Funderburg (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) sank a free throw to give the home team a 44-40 advantage one minute into the second stanza. Mallory had a jumper, a three-point play and a free throw to push the lead back to 10 at 54-44 with 14:40 left in the contest. The Hornets cut it to six before Johnson and senior DaQuan Morris (Philadelphia, Pa./Hill School) sandwiched three-pointers around five points by Anthony in an 11-4 run as R-MC went up 65-52 with 8:30 remaining. Lynchburg scored four straight before a layup by Mallory, treys by Morris and Johnson, and a layup by Anthony gave the Yellow Jackets their largest lead at 77-58 with 3:30 left. A final three-pointer by Mallory with 30 seconds left gave R-MC the 84-65 victory.

By The Numbers:

  • The Yellow Jackets had four players score in double figures. Anthony had 26, Mallory added 19, Johnson had a career-best 12 and Talbert tallied 11.
  • R-MC shot 49% from the floor (34-70). The Yellow Jackets shot 44% (16-36) in the first half and 53% (18-34) in the second half. The Yellow Jackets had a 42-26 advantage on points in the paint.
  • The Yellow Jacket defense held the Hornets to 65 points, matching the lowest total of the season for Lynchburg. R-MC held the Hornets to 30% shooting in the second half (9-30) after Lynchburg shot 48% in the first half (15-31). The Hornets hit five three-pointers in the first half but went 0 for 8 in the second half.
  • R-MC had a 40-39 edge on the glass. Mallory had 10, while sophomore Daniel Mbangue (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) grabbed seven.
  • Mallory had seven blocks, a season high and matching his career best.
  • The Yellow Jackets had 21 assists on their 34 field goals. Talbert dished out eight and Anthony added six.
  • R-MC committed just seven turnovers for the second consecutive game, the second-lowest total of the season.

  • The Yellow Jackets extended their home winning streak to 39 games, the longest current streak in Division III.
  • R-MC has won 21 of the past 23 meetings with Lynchburg.
  • Mallory's seven blocks give him 133 for his career the third-highest total in program history.
  • Anthony had one steal to give him 206 for his career, a program record.
  • Anthony had six assists to give him 637 in his career, the second-highest total in program history and the second-highest total in ODAC history.
  • Anthony had 26 points to give him 1,640 for his career, the fourth-highest total in program history.
