Shoremen Top Bullets in Double OT Battle

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior Alex Leder (Bethesda, Md./Bullis) and senior Nick Lord (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) hit game-tying shots in regulation and overtime, respectively, but Washington College's Daniel Brown banked in a three-pointer with 2.2 seconds left in double-overtime to send the Shoremen past Gettysburg College 100-99 in an epic Centennial Conference battle inside Bream Gym Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened…

  • First Half
    • Washington opened with the first bucket on a jumper by Allen, but Gettysburg jumped onto the board on a big fast-break two-handed hammer by Close. Close added a three-pointer on the team's next possession and the Bullets eventually pulled in front 12-4 on a lay-up by McKeon with 13:13 left.
    • The Shoremen found their range and knocked in a pair of three-pointers as part of a 10-2 run to tie the game 14-14. Antolini posted eight points in the final 5:43, including a pair of three-pointers to push the lead back to five (28-23). The visitors cut the deficit to 30-28 by the break.
  • Second Half
    • Gettysburg padded its lead early in the second half and seized an eight-point advantage (39-31) on a three-pointer by Lord. Washington answered and tied the game at 41-41 following a four-point play out of the corner by Carter.
    • The Bullets attacked the paint later in the half with a pair of buckets by Duffey helping to lift the lead back to eight (55-47) with 11:19.
    • The Shoremen rallied on the strength long-distance shooting, knocking down a trio of three-pointers over the next four minutes and taking the lead for the first time since the opening bucket on a shot by Carter which made it 62-61 with 7:35 left.
    • Washington appeared on the verge of victory in the final minutes of regulation with a three-pointer by Lewis pushing the score to 75-70 with 1:50 left. The Bullets tested the Shoremen at the free throw line and the strategy paid off as the visitors missed three attempts. Lord cut the deficit to 76-75 with a three-pointer with 12 seconds remaining.
    • Becker hit his second free throw attempt with 7.9 seconds left and the Bullets put the ball in the hands of Leder for the game-tying shot. The junior guard drove to the hoop and levitated in the air for the game-tying lay-up just before the buzzer.
  • Overtime
    • Washington jumped in front with a three-pointer by Lewis, though Leder answered right back with a trey following an offensive board by Antolini. Back-to-back three-pointers by Becker made it 86-80 with 1:36 left.
    • Gettysburg turned in seven of the next nine points with a long-distance shot by Antolini pulling the Bullets within one at 88-87 with 24 seconds left.
    • Allen knocked down his second free throw attempt, opening the door for the Bullets to tie the game. Leder kept his dribble despite falling to one knee and found Lord for a lay-in under the hoop with 13 seconds left. A jumper by Wright was off-target at the buzzer.
  • Double Overtime
    • Lewis opened the second extra session with another three-pointer, but the Shoremen sharpshooter fouled out a minute later. McKeon hit four consecutive free throws and found Antolini for a lay-up and a 95-92 lead.
    • Momentum shifted quickly in the final minute with Leder hitting a reverse lay-up to push the lead back to three (97-94) only to see Allen hit a baseline jumper and draw contact for a foul. He knocked down the freebie to tie the game with 40 seconds left.
    • Lord was fouled with 17 seconds left and the senior knocked down both attempts to put Gettysburg up 99-97. On Washington's final possession, Becker drove down the left side of the lane and dished it off to Brown. Brown's shot caromed off the glass and into the hoop for the one-point lead.
    • Gettysburg in-bounded the ball across mid-court to Antolini. The senior caught the ball and quickly rose up for a 30-footer, but Brown deflected the shot attempt as the final horn went off.

 
By the Numbers

  • The two teams nearly turned in identical shooting performances with Washington finishing slightly ahead with a mark of 47.2 percent (34-of-72). Gettysburg finished 46.6 percent (34-of-73) from the field.
  • The two teams combined for 55 attempted three-pointers with the Shoremen finishing with a 13-10 lead in made long-distance tries. Gettysburg was 21-of-24 (87.5 percent) from the charity stripe, while Washington was 19-of-29 (65.5 percent).
  • Antolini missed a career high by one point. The senior was 10-of-22 from the field with three of those makes coming from beyond the arc. He also posted his ninth career double-double.
  • Leder hit the 20-point mark for the fourth time this season. He dished out five or more assists for the ninth time, including the third as part of a 20-point performance.
  • Gettysburg's last double-overtime outing prior to Saturday also came against Washington. The Shoremen pulled out a 91-90 victory on their court on Dec. 3, 2016.

 
Where the Series Stands
Washington picked up its third-straight win over Gettysburg. The Bullets lead the series 34-17.
