- The Lead: Led by three players in double figures, the MIT men's basketball team pulled away for a 76-60 home win over the U.S. Coast Guard Academy on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Engineers got off to a slow start and quickly trailed by a 9-2 margin with 15:25 left after a three-pointer from Jason Frazer. MIT answered with an 11-4 run though, capped by layup from senior Christien Williams (Charlotte, N.C.), to tie the game at 13-13.
- Coast Guard briefly regained a one-point lead before the Engineers took control over the final eight minutes of the first half. A layup from sophomore Dan Pilsbury (Millington, N.J.) extended the lead to double figures for the first time and a dunk by first-year Kael Kordonowy (Wichita, Kan.) closed the half and gave MIT a 34-17 halftime edge.
- MIT quickly pushed the lead up to 20 in the opening minutes of the second period and led by as many as 24 at 65-41 with 7:50 on the clock. Coast Guard hung in there and hit a trio of three-pointers over the final six minutes to cut into the lead. The Engineer defense turned away the potential Bears rally and eventually came away with the 16-point victory. MIT holds a 57-42 lead in the all-time series and has now won three straight over Coast Guard.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Junior Ian Hinkley (Raleigh, N.C.) led MIT with 30 points on 9-of-20 shooting, while Kordonowy nearly registered a triple-double with 13 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Williams posted a career-high 16 points and seven rebounds to go along with three assists and a perfect 6-for-6 shooting from the field.
- For the Bears, Paul Costain tallied 16 points off the bench, while Tyler Perez nearly finished with a double-double with nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
- MIT held Coast Guard to 20.7 percent shooting from the field and 6.3 percent from three in the first half. The Engineers also outshot the Bears from the field, three-point land and the three-point line while earning assists on 18 of 26 made field goals.
