Big Second Half Lifts York (Pa.) Past Franklin & Marshall

YORK, PA – The York College men's basketball squad used a lock down defensive effort in the second half to roll past Franklin & Marshall 78-58 in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon in York.

The game was a make-up from opening night when an F&M student protest halted the game before it started on November 8 at the Mayser Center in Lancaster.

The game was tied at 33 at the half but the Spartans outscored the Diplomats 45-25 in the second half to earn their second straight win and second straight win in the series against the Dips.

How It Happened:

• The first half was a struggle for both offenses. The Spartans started off ice cold from three coming off a game in which they hit 14-of-28 from distance in the win over Gwynedd Mercy on Tuesday. The game was tied at 11, 6:29 into the game as both teams struggled to convert their offensive opportunities.

• The remainder of the first half would be back and forth with ten total ties and four lead changes during the stanza. York's biggest lead was four points on a pair of Jared Wagner free throws while F&M's biggest advantage was two points. Wagner gave the Spartans a 33-31 lead on a tough lay up with 22 seconds left in the half but Les Thomas was fouled with two seconds remaining on the clock. He sunk both free throws as the teams headed to the intermission tied at 33.

• The second half opened with the teams trading points in the first four possessions as the game as tied at 37 a minute and a half into the stanza. The Spartans then ripped off a 7-0 run as Colin Rimel hit a long jumper and Joe Polczynski followed with a three pointer and a pair of free throws to give York a 44-37 advantage. The Diplomats kept the Spartans in reach as York continued to try to pull away. Zach Novick hit a three pointer with 11:54 left to put York up 11 but the Diplomats trimmed the lead to six on a three pointer from Jaka Pandza. The Spartans answered with a prolonged 11-3 run to take a 65-51 lead with 5:44 left in the game.

• F&M cut the Spartan lead back to nine at 65-56 but the Spartans ended the game on a 13-2 run to close out their 20-point victory. The Spartans limited the Diplomats to just 30.4% shooting from the field in the second half. The Green and White also dominated the Dips on the glass, 23-14, after getting outrebounded 20-16 in the first half. York outscored the Diplomats 26-6 in the paint in the second half while they also had an 11-2 advantage in second chance points. York was 14-for-18 on two pointers in the second half of play.

The Spartans have won two straight in the series against the Diplomats … junior David Giuliani continues to be a force in the post for the Spartans as he registered a career-high 21 points while his eight rebounds ties a career-high that he also matched earlier in the year at Johns Hopkins … Giuliani had set his previous career-high of 19 points in the Tuesday win over Gwynedd Mercy … senior Jared Wagner pulled in a season-high 10 rebounds for his second straight double-double … Wagner now has 1,077 points as he is five points back of former Spartan standout Jason Saurbaugh for 23rd place on the all-time scoring list … Wagner picked up a pair of steals as he now has 230 for his career while his six assists give him 392 in 93 games as a Spartan … senior Joe Polczynski recorded a season-high 18 points as he has 38 points in his last three games … he pulled in a career-high nine rebounds, besting his former career-high of eight that he set in the game at Roanoke on November 16 … the Spartans shot a season-worst 4-of-24 from three (16.7%) but still shot 50.9% from the floor in the game … the Spartans went 25-for-33 from two in game (75.7%) … York's four three pointers mark just the second time this year that the Spartans have not hit double figures in three pointers in a game (8 at Roanoke) … York held the Diplomats to 35.2% shooting from the floor, their second best defensive effort of the year (33.3% vs. Johnson & Wales on November 15) … the win is the second time the Spartans have held an opponent under 60 points in a game … the 20-point win is York's fifth of the year … York's average margin of victory in their five wins is 23.8 points per game … York finished the game with a 39-34 margin on the glass and that's the fifth time this year the Spartans won the battle of the boards … York has done a good job of taking care of the ball as they have turned the ball over 38 times in their last three games (12.6 to/game) … The Spartans made a season-high 16 free throws in the win with Wagner going 7-for-8 while Polczynski went 5-for-5 … York was tied at the half for the first time this year … the Spartans are now 2-0 at home … York is 5-0 when shooting over 45% from the floor … the Spartans are now 5-0 when they have more assists than turnovers.
