The Short Story: Sophomore Tom Quarry erupted for 34 points, including 19 in the first half, to lead the 22nd-ranked Johns Hopkins men's basketball team to an 82-62 win at McDaniel in both teams' Centennial Conference opener.

How it Happened

• Quarry opened the game with a back-door cut and dunk, followed by a steal, dunk and free throw from classmate Ethan Bartlett. Quarry then drained a three-pointer from the top of the key and just like that it was 8-0 Hopkins. McDaniel pulled back within two at the 16:30-mark with back-to-back triples.

• The teams traded scores over a three-minute span and it was 13-10 Blue Jays. Senior Harry O'Neil converted a pair of free throws to spark a 10-2 run that saw the Jays' lead balloon to 11 in just over two minutes. Caleb Johnson hit a bucket in the paint and then went one-of-two from the line to cut the deficit to eight at the 7:26-mark.

• Hopkins responded with corner threes from Quarry and freshman Carson James and JHU led 29-15. A Stephen Lang layup was answered with a Quarry hook shot and a Sidney Thybulle dunk to push the lead to 33-17.

• Leading 36-21 with 3:57 to play in the half, James drained a three from the corner to ignite a quick 8-1 run. Quarry capped the run with another bucket from downtown to stake Hopkins to a 44-22 lead. The Green Terror battled back with a 5-2 spurt to close the half and the Blue Jays took a 46-27 lead into the locker room.

 • Quarry picked up right he left off, scoring 15 of Hopkins' first 19 points of the half as the Blue Jays took a 65-33 lead at the 13:42-mark. JHU led by as much as 35 with 7:35 to play before McDaniel made a late run and the Blue Jays took home the 20-point win.

What it Means

• Hopkins improves to 89-77-1 all-time against McDaniel and has won seven straight in the series. The Blue Jays have won four straight, and five of the last six, in Westminster.
