Tommies start MIAC season with home win

No. 7-ranked St. Thomas raced to a 28-point lead just after halftime en route to a 74-60 home win over Carleton in MIAC men's basketball play Tuesday night at Schoenecker Arena.

Playing their sixth game in 13 days but first of the season at home, the Tommies (5-1 overall, 1-0 MIAC) received 42 bench points, led by 13 points each from Elijah Hannah and Zach Theisen, as each sank three treys.

Over the first 20 minutes, the Toms made eight treys, shot 51 percent from the floor, and had just five turnovers to lead 44-25 at the break. They used an 11-2 run to start the second half to build the lead to 55-27.

The Knights (1-2, 0-2) closed the game on a 20-10 run. Alex Battist finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Jeremy Beckler scored 13 for Carleton.
