St. Thomas men take home Midway crown with Sunday win

Senior Tommy Anderson and sophomore Zach Theisen each scored 14 points and No. 15-ranked Tommie Men's Basketball shot 58 percent from the floor en route to a 84-68 victory over DePauw for the championship of the University of Chicago Midway Classic.

A 29-9 Tommie run over the last 11:25 of the first half built a 41-27 halftime lead. St. Thomas pulled away with a 23-10 run to start the second half.

St. Thomas (4-1) was playing its fifth game in 11 days to open the season, all far away from campus from Spokane to Duluth to Chicago.

After sinking 19 treys on Saturday in a 19-point win over No. 9-ranked Nebraska Wesleyan, the Purple made 12 from 3-point range on Sunday.

Sophomore guard Anders Nelson and senior Elijah Hannah each scored 11 points, and sophomore Kevin Cunningham added nine points. The Toms had a modest 13 turnovers

DePauw (2-2) shot 54 percent from the field and made eight treys.

St. Thomas starts conference play and has its home opener Tuesday against Carleton (7 p.m.).
