Kalamazoo College's Smith Heads to University of Michigan

Jay Smith is leaving his position as Kalamazoo College's head men's basketball coach in order to accept a position as men's basketball director of player personnel at University of Michigan both schools announced Monday. A national search for Kalamazoo College's next head men's basketball coach will begin immediately.

Smith coached the Hornets for three seasons beginning in 2016. Smith guided the Hornets to a four-win improvement during his first season and led Kalamazoo College to a tie for sixth place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association this past season, the program's best finish since 2011. He was an important catalyst for multiple facility improvements at Anderson Athletic Center including new bleachers, scorer's tables, lobby renovation, a new court divider, and visual enhancements inside and outside. Smith was the 14th head coach in the history of the program.

"We thank Jay for his contributions to Kalamazoo College over the years, and wish him all the best at Michigan," said Athletic Director Becky Hall.
