AMHERST, Mass. - Senior Darryl Williams (Columbia, Md./Glenelg Country) scored a career high 23 points and recorded his second double-double with 10 rebounds as the fifth-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team was nipped 58-57 by No. 6 Swarthmore on Friday evening in the sectional semifinals of the 2019 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament.

How It Happened

  • After the Garnet jumped out to a 7-4 lead, Williams hit a pair of treys as the Yellow Jackets took their first lead at 10-7 with 16:30 left in the first half. R-MC led 14-12 before four treys by senior Luke Neeley (Orange, Va./Woodberry Forest) capped a 20-8 run as the Yellow Jackets took a 34-20 advantage with eight minutes remaining. SC cut the deficit to six before a 10-foot jumper in the lane by sophomore Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) gave R-MC a 41-33 lead at the half. Williams had 16 points in the first half, while Neeley put up 12 and Anthony added nine.
  • SC started the second half on a 14-6 spurt to tie the game at 47-47 with 13:10 remaining. A three-pointer and layup by Williams, followed by a layup by junior Corey Bays (Bel Air, Md./MC Wright) made up a 7-2 run as the Yellow Jackets took a 54-49 advantage with 8:45 left. The Garnet scored six straight points to take a 55-54 lead with 1:45 remaining. Bays buried a trey with 25 seconds left to put R-MC on top 57-55. SC worked the ball around the perimeter and hit a three-pointer from the left corner with seven seconds left to take a 58-57 lead. R-MC missed a shot and a follow at the buzzer to fall by one point.

By The Numbers

  • Williams went 9 for 16 from the floor and 5 for 9 from behind the arc for his 23 points. His five treys set a career high. Williams had 10 rebounds, including three on the offensive end.
  • Neeley hit four treys for his 12 points.
  • Anthony had nine points, six assists and a career-best 10 rebounds.
  • After SC shot 73% from the floor and 82% on three-pointers in its second-round NCAA tourney game, the R-MC held the Garnet to 38% on field goals (25-66) and 25% from beyond the arc (7-28).
