SALEM, Va. - Senior Darryl Williams (Columbia, Md./Glenelg Country) led all scorers with 12 points as the 5th-ranked and top-seeded Randolph-Macon men's basketball team defeated No. 9 Randolph 79-42 on Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament to advance to Saturday's semifinals and extend its win streak to 11.

How It Happened

  • Williams had a layup for the game's first points and his three-pointer four minutes into the contest gave the Yellow Jackets a 7-4 lead, a lead they would not relinquish. After a bucket by the Wildcats, freshman Ian Robertson (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) sparked a 17-1 spurt as R-MC went up 24-7 with 8:35 left in the first half. The Yellow Jacket defense held Randolph without a field goal for nearly seven minutes. After a three-pointer by Randolph, sophomore Terry Woods (Burlington, N.C./Burlington School) and junior Korey Turner (Midlothian, Va./Amelia Academy) pushed the advantage to 28-10 with 6:10 remaining. Freshman Daquan Morris (Philadelphia, Pa./Hill School) had a layup and a three-pointer to make it 33-14 with two minutes left. Junior Corey Bays (Bel Air, Md./CM Wright) nailed a long trey at the buzzer as the Yellow Jackets took a 38-18 lead at intermission. Ten different Yellow Jackets scored, with Williams leading the way with eight. Senior Jon Nowell (Riverdale, Ga./Blair Academy) had four points, six rebounds and four blocks. The R-MC defense held Randolph to 29.6% shooting (8-27), including 1 for 5 on three-pointers (20%).
  • Nowell had a three-point play to start the second half as the advantage grew to 41-18. Consecutive layups by sophomore David Funderburg (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) and Turner made the score 50-24 with 14:25 remaining in the second half. A Neeley layup and trey gave the Yellow Jackets a 65-36 lead with 8:25 left. A jumper by Woods pushed the advantage to 32 at 68-36 with 3:45 remaining. A pair of layups by junior Kent Kilgroe (St. Petersburg, Fla./Shorecrest Prep) and a bucket by Morris made the final 79-42.

By The Numbers

  • Neeley finished with 11 points to go with the 12 by Williams. Nowell, the ODAC/Farm Bureau Scholar-Athlete of the Year, had eight points and eight rebounds. The Yellow Jackets had 11 different players score.
  • ODAC Player of the Year, sophomore Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had eight assists. R-MC had 18 assists on 30 field goals.
