ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Senior Alec Warren (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) poured in a career-high 25 points as the Gettysburg College men's basketball team wrapped up the season with a 78-69 victory at Muhlenberg College on Saturday evening.
The Bullets (6-19, 5-13 CC) swept the series against the Mules (12-13, 9-9 CC) for the first time since the 2015-16 season.
Warren concluded his senior campaign on a high note as he hit 7-of-15 from the three-point line and added two assists and a steal. Junior Nick Antolini (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) posted his sixth double-double of the season with 23 points and 12 rebounds, making 10-of-16 from the field. Sophomore Avery Close (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) turned in 14 points and a season-high 13 rebounds (five offensive, eight defensive). Junior Danny Duffey (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) dished out a team-high six assists.
Three Muhlenberg players collected double-figure scoring with Dan Gaines pacing the team with 23 points.
Warren nailed back-to-back treys to open the first half to fuel a 13-3 run for the Bullets. The Mules fired right back as they assembled a 14-2 run to take a 16-15 advantage with 9:40 on the clock. Six ties then occurred over a five-minute span, but the Bullets pulled ahead when Antolini made a jumper with 1:42 left. Warren drained his sixth three-pointer of the half at the 33 second marker to push the Bullets lead 37-32 at intermission. The Orange and Blue shot 45.2 percent (14-of-31) from the floor and 50 percent (7-of-14) from three-point land.
Nate Henty Brown hit a trey eight seconds into the second half for the Mules to slice the deficit down to two, but that was as close as they would reach in the final period. The Bullets never trailed in the second half, leading by 10 points on four different occasions.
Muhlenberg struck back with 1:16 to go as they drilled a trey to come within six (67-61). A lay-up by Close on the next possession put the Bullets back ahead by eight. Three free throws and a trey by the Mules cut the lead down to four with 44 seconds on the clock. In a free throw shooting affair, the last nine points for the Bullets came from the charity stripe with Warren and Close both sinking four each to win the final regular season contest.
The Bullets finished 27-of-69 from the field (39.1 percent) and out-rebounded Muhlenberg 46-41. Gettysburg knocked down a total of 26 three-points in the last two games, making 46.4 percent from down town.
