Bison open season with win over Falcons

Sophomore Matt Morrow posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in Nichols College's season-opening 84-75 win in non-conference men's basketball action Tuesday night at the Fitchburg State Recreation Center.
 
Senior Marcos Echevarria led all student-athletes with 21 points (8-of-17 FG) and was one of six Nichols student-athletes in double figures in scoring. Junior Kash Jackson scored 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting – including three 3-pointers – while classmate DeAnte Bruton also scored 13 points to go with four steals and four dimes. The win marked the first collegiate head coaching win for Nichols head coach Scott Faucher.
 
Junior Kewan Platt netted a team-high 16 points for the Falcons (1-2), who shot just 56 percent from the charity stripe (15-of-27). Juniors Kameron Jimenez-Fox and Tyrell St. John each chipped in with 15 points.
 
The Bison (1-0) converted 19 Fitchburg State turnovers into 21 points and canned 51 percent of their shots (30-of-59). Each team pulled down 35 rebounds.
 
Three things you need to know...

-Tonight's contest marked the 41st all-time meeting between Nichols and Fitchburg State. The Bison have won two-straight and four of the last six meetings with the Falcons, but still trail the series 22-19.

-Nichols has now won two-straight and six of its last eight season-openers.

-Freshman Jaekwon Spencer scored the first points of his collegiate career for Nichols as he converted 4-of-5 from the free throw line.
