Men's Basketball Fends Off Rhodes in Overtime, 61-59

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - After the Rhodes Lynx forced overtime, the Sewanee men's basketball team rallied to fend off the home team, 61-59, Sunday afternoon inside Mallory Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The game featured five ties and six lead changes, and the Lynx had a nine-point lead, 15-6, with 12 minutes left in the first half.

-Sewanee had a cold start from the field, but as the team trailed 21-12 with under eight minutes left in the opening half, went on a 9-2 run to trailed 23-21 with three minutes left in the period.

-Rhodes got its lead back to five, but it was wiped away quickly as the Tigers took a 28-27 lead into the locker thanks to a trey by Michael Barry.

-The Lynx followed the same script as the Tigers did in the final 20 minutes, Trailing by eight, 50-42, with 6:28 left in regulation, the home team went on a 10-2 run to even the score at 52 with 2:30 left.

-Sewanee reclaimed the lead, 56-54, on a three-point play by Luke Smith with 41 seconds left, but the Lynx's Bryce Berry drained two free throws on the next possession with 25 seconds left to even the score once again.

-The Tigers had a chance to win the game, however, as Cam Caldwell drove inside the paint, he was called for an offensive foul with less than two seconds left.

-The home team tried for a half court miracle, but it was for not and the game went into overtime.

-After a 3-pointer by Daniel Darst to start the Rhodes scoring in the extra stanza, the Purple and Gold did not allow their opponent to score the rest of the period. Sewanee scored the final five points, as the Tigers took the lead for good on a Joey Knox layup with two minutes to go.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Luke Smith dropped his 10th 20-point game of the season with a 21-point effort on Sunday, The sophomore went 7-of-16 from the field and added six rebounds and three steals.

-Cam Caldwell added 18 points and five boards.

-Jonny Crumly contributed nine rebounds, while Joey Knox scored nine points.

-The Tigers win their first game in three overtime games this season and the first in five in the Mick Hedgepeth era.

-Sewanee wins its first overtime game since Jan. 3, 2017 when Sewanee took down Piedmont on the road in double overtime, 85-83.

-Sewanee's last overtime win inside Southern Athletic Association play came against Rhodes on Jan. 21, 2014, when the Tigers defeated the Lynx 81-69.

RHODES KEY STATISTICS
-Daniel Darst missed a double-double by one point with a nine-point, 18-rebound performance.

-Brenden McNamara led the Lynx scoring with 13 points off the bench.

UP NEXT
The Tigers will wrap up the regular season at home with three games inside Juhan Gymnasium. Sewanee will host Berry, winners of five straight, to start the homestand Friday night.
