Keuka College Men's Basketball Outlasts Penn St.-Berks in Overtime

READING, Pa. — The Keuka College Men's Basketball team outscored hosts Penn St.-Berks 18-12 in overtime as the Wolves topped the Nittany Lions 89-83 in a Norht Eastern Athletic Conference game on Saturday.

Keuka College (6-5, 3-1 NEAC) got a balanced effort behind three double-doubles. Trevor Powell (Manassas, Va. / Osbourn) led the way in scoring with 23 points to go with his 10 rebounds. James Barnes (Rochester, N.Y. / University Prep) finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds while Ryder Mansfield (Concord, N.C. / Charlotte United) added 13 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.

Keuka College 89 at Penn St.-Berks 83 - OT

A slow start saw Keuka College turn to the bench early as a pair of freshmen set up the first basket of the game for either team two-minutes into the game on Saturday. Jason Canestrino (Midlothian, Va. / Millwood School) got the assist in setting up a three-pointer by Alex Medellin (Mesa, Ariz. / Desert Ridge). Medellin followed that up with his second three of the game which stood as the only Wolves points in the first 6:30 of play. The Keuka College defense held at the other end of the floor and did not allow the game to get out of hand. The Wolves trailed by five midway through the first, but scored 16 unanswered points over a seven-minute stretch to take a 31-20 lead. The Green and Gold led 33-25 at the half.

Penn St.-Berks began to slowly cut into the lead behind hot three-point shooting from deep. The Nittany Lions made seven threes in the second half as they erased the Keuka College lead with ten minutes left in regulation. The teams would trade the lead, but the game went to the final minute with Keuka trailing by three. With 54 seconds left, Trevor Powell hit a triple for the Wolves to tie the game at 71-71. The Nittany Lions would get a second-chance opportunity, but were unable to score as the game would go to overtime.

The Wolves staked an early lead, scoring the first four of the bonus frame. Free throws would prove to be the difference on Saturday. Keuka scored 14 of their 18 points in overtime from the charity stripe, going 14-16 (87.5%), as the Wolves defeated Penn St.-Berks 89-83.

KC Notes:

  • Saturday was the third time that Keuka College and Penn St.-Berks played to overtime. The Wolves are now 2-1 in those games
  • Despite having an 11-9 lead in the series overall, it was only Keuka's fourth win while playing in Reading
  • James Barnes went 9-10 from the free throw line on Saturday. He surpassed 300 career points and now has over 100 career free throws
  • It was the tenth career double-double for both Ryder Mansfield and Trevor Powell
  • Sam Brown (Syracuse, N.Y. / West Genesee) scored a season-high 14 points for Keuka College, hitting a team-high four three-pointers

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves travel to Williamsport on Sunday to face Penn College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference game. Keuka College swept the season series against the Wildcats last season are a perfect 5-0 all-time against Penn College.
