No. 14 Warhawks Down UW-Stout

The No. 14 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team used a strong combination of defense and rebounding Wednesday night in an 83-60 victory over UW-Stout in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest at Kachel Gymnasium.

 

The Warhawks (12-2 overall, 1-2 WIAC) forced 25 turnovers and held a 43-29 advantage in rebounding, including a 15-4 edge in offensive rebounds that led to a 16-5 margin in second-chance points.

 

Senior guard Andre Brown posted 20 points, four rebounds and five assists to lead UW-Whitewater, which shot 47.1 percent from the floor and held the Blue Devils (7-7, 0-3) to 40 percent from the field.

 

Senior guard Dalton Menke registered 11 points and three steals, and senior forward Melvin Brown Jr., senior guard Malik Clements and junior guard Tywon Bressler tallied 10 points apiece. Brown Jr. added 10 rebounds and four assists for his second double-double of the season.

 

UW-Whitewater took its first double-digit lead with 12:47 to play in the first half following a fast-break bucket by Clements.

 

The Warhawks built their lead all the way up to 15 on a 3-pointer by Menke midway through the half, but UW-Stout whittled it down to five by the 5:00 mark.

 

UW-Whitewater ended the period on a 13-4 run, including five straight points from Brown to conclude the half.

 

The Warhawks ran their lead up to 19 on a 3-pointer by senior guard Mitchell Pfeifer with 17:47 on the clock, and brought it to 20 on a 3-pointer by Menke with 14:28 remaining.

 

From there, UW-Whitewater never led by fewer than 15 points. The team took its largest lead with 2:42 to play at 81-57 following a bucket by freshman forward Jack Brahm.

 

The Warhawks continue WIAC play at UW-La Crosse this Saturday at 7 p.m.
