HAVERFORD, Pa. – Sophomore Nick Antolini (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) turned in his first career double-double and Gettysburg College took advantage of a 15-0 start to earn a 77-67 victory at Haverford College in Centennial Conference men's basketball action Saturday afternoon.
Gettysburg (6-15, 4-10 CC) hit its first five field goal attempts in beating Haverford (6-15, 2-12 CC) for the second time this season. Antolini tied senior Cameron Stewart (Sydney, Australia/Newington College) for high-scoring honors with 16 points. The sophomore also topped his personal high for rebounds with 10.
Senior Matt England (Warrington, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) just missed a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Junior Luke Cooper (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) tallied 11 points, seven rebounds, and six assists.
Haverford placed four in double-figures with Kahlil Garnes leading the way with 13 points. Jonathan Lang and Joe Scibelli each produced a dozen tallies, while Jesse Turkson logged 11. Scibelli grabbed a dozen rebounds.
A pair of free throws by sophomore Nick Lord (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) kicked off the Bullets' opening run. Antolini keyed the effort with a pair of lay-ups and a three-pointer to cap the 15-0 start at 17:37.
Gettysburg maintained its double-figure lead throughout most of the first half. After Haverford pulled to 27-17, the Bullets turned in the next 10 points with a three-pointer by Stewart making it 37-17 with 3:50 left in the opening half. The visitors strolled into the locker room leading 43-27.
Haverford managed to trim the deficit down to nine (47-38) on a three-pointer by Garnes with 15:41 left. Back-to-back buckets by Cooper and sophomore Joey Carroll (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) pushed the margin back to double-figures and it would grow to 23 on a three-pointer by freshman Avery Close (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) with just over nine minutes remaining.
The hosts polished off the game with a 17-5 run over the final six minutes.
Gettysburg finished 28-of-63 (44.4 percent) from the floor, including 9-of-17 (52.9 percent) from beyond the arc. The Bullets held Haverford to just 22-of-65 (33.8 percent). The Fords held a 51-42 advantage on the glass.
The Orange and Blue visit Dickinson College (12-9, 8-6 CC) Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
