Brockport pulls away from Bears late, 68-53

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The College at Brockport (13-3, 8-1 SUNYAC) pulled away in the second half from the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (8-8, 3-6 SUNYAC) to capture a 68-53 victory on Friday night. Junior forward Nosa Onabor(Brooklyn, N.Y./Northside Charter) scored nine points and had a career-high 17 rebounds to lead the Bears.
 
After a jumper from Golden Eagles guard Josh Nelson (Jamestown, N.Y./Frewsburg), sophomore guard Danny Delsol-Lowry (Queens, N.Y./Queens H.S. of Teaching) answered with a 3-pointer to give Potsdam a 3-2 lead. The Bears' advantage was short as Brockport sophomore forward Justin Summers (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bushwick Campus) countered with a layup for. The Golden Eagles stayed in front for most of the first half, but could only extend the lead to six. With 6:50 remaining at half, Onabor made a shot from beyond the arc to give Potsdam an 18-17 advantage. The very next possession, Golden Eagles junior forward Michael O'Hara (Northport, N.Y./Northport) laid in a bucket to retake the lead at 19-18 with 6:29 to play. The Golden Eagles kept the lead entering halftime up 34-27, with Delsol-Lowry leading the Bears with eight points.
 
Brockport kept the pressure on during the first few minutes of the second, but with a three from senior captain Kevin Baksh (Queens, N.Y./Richmond Hill) and a layup from junior forward Serigne Kane(Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Prep) Potsdam cut the deficit to three at 42-39 with 15:13 to go. At 12:23 sophomore guard Jayquan Thomas (Hollis, N.Y./Richmond Hill) made a layup to narrow the gap to 46-44, however the Golden Eagles answered with a 20-5 run. Sophomore guard Tyler Collins (Newark, N.Y./Newark) scored 11 of the team's points during the stretch. Potsdam outscored Brockport in the closing minutes, but Brockport closed out the 68-53 win.
 
Delsol-Lowry finished with 11 points, three assists, and a pair of steals, while Kane ended with nine points and seven rebounds.
 
Collins led the Golden Eagles with 17 points, and Summers had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Senior guard Hamed Shamseldin (Lawrence, N.Y./Lawrence) put up 13 points and team-high three assists, while junior guard Dwayne Daniel (Queens, N.Y./Lawrence) came off the bench for 10 points and two steals.
 
Brockport shot 37.5 percent from the field and Potsdam shot 32.8 percent. Both teams finished with 46 rebounds. The Bears had 12 offensive rebounds and the Golden Eagles had nine.
 
Potsdam is back in action tomorrow at 3 p.m. as they host the SUNY Geneseo Knights.
