LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. (Jan. 31, 2017) – For the second straight game, the Sewanee men's basketball team's offense struggled. With that, regional-rival Covenant took advantage of its opportunities en route to a 73-56 victory over the Tigers, Tuesday, inside the Barnes P.E. Center.
The Tigers were limited to a 36.2 field goal percentage. That included a season-low 15.8 percentage for shots taken beyond the three-point line. By comparison, Covenant made 52 percent of its attempts while going 7-for-19 from outside.
After Leo Born hit a jumper on the Tigers' opening possession, the Scots outscored Sewanee 15-3 over the next six minutes.
Eventually, Covenant stretched its lead to 24-8 midway through the first half. Sewanee clawed back into the game after a tip-in from Adrian Thomas sparked an 18-7 spurt.
Down 35-28 after halftime, Sewanee could never mount another rally. For most of the second half, Covenant maintained a double-digit lead.
Individually, Williams finished with 12 points while Brody Stone added 11 points and nine rebounds. Thomas also finished in double figures with 10 points and nine boards.
With his two threes Tuesday, Williams is now the all-time program leader in three-point field goals made. He has 262 made threes.
Z Arima led Covenant with 15 points. Caleb Haynes (13 points), Bailey Spragg (12 points), and Will Portlock (10 points) were also in double figures for the Scots.
With its non-conference scheduled completed, Sewanee returns to Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play with an 8:00 p.m. contest against Berry, Friday.
