POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Geneseo (11-5, 6-3 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (1-14, 0-9) 80-60 on Friday night in SUNYAC play. Sophomore guard Nosa Onabor (Brooklyn, N.Y./Northside Charter) led the Bears with 15 points. Sophomore forward Serigne Kane (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Prep) had 12 points and six rebounds and freshman guard Jayquan Thomas (Hollis, N.Y./Richmond Hill) scored 10 points and grabbed three boards.
The teams traded baskets over the first three minutes. Onabor hit a three and a jumper and Kane drained a three to get the Bears with 9-8 at 16:54. The Blue Knights then pulled away with a 20-5 run to take a 29-14 lead at 9:06. C.J. Burke had seven points during the stretch. The scoring was 13-13 over the rest of the half and Potsdam trailed 42-27 at the break.
Geneseo kept its solid lead throughout the second half. Onabor recorded a three-point play at 17:03 to get the Bears within 46-34, but they would get no closer. Kane scored nine points in the second half. Onabor and had seven points in the final 20 minutes and senior center Al Berete (Queens, N.Y./Sister Clara Muhammed) scored six of his career-high eight points in the half.
Burke finished with a contest best 20 points and six rebounds and Jack Manke contributed 17 points and five boards for the Blue Knights.
Potsdam is back in action tomorrow afternoon when the Bears travel to Brockport for a 2 p.m. showdown with the Golden Eagles.
