Covenant hits 19 3-pointers in 100-67 win over Dallas

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant men's basketball team hit 19 3-pointers and had 15 different players score in a 100-67 rout of the University of Dallas on Friday night inside Barnes PE Center.

Covenant (2-0) hit 10 3-pointers in the first half and then buried nine more in the second. The Scots connected on 59.4 percent (19-of-32) from behind the arc and shot 54.4 percent (37-of-68) for the game. As a team, Covenant dished out 27 assists.

All 16 available players saw action and 15 scored led by Berto Dryden's 13 points to go along with five assists and four steals. Connor Sears had 11 points and five rebounds, while Z Arima scored 11 points with three assists off the bench. 12 different players also made at least one 3-pointer.

The barrage of 3-pointers started early as Sears connected on a trey on Covenant's first possession of the night, then added a layup on the ensuing possession to give Covenant an early 5-0 lead. The Scots led 22-17 with 11:36 left in the half before going on a 13-4 run, capped by a Zack Allen 3-pointer with 8:50 to go for a 35-21 lead. That margin would grow to 16 as a pair of Dryden free throws in the final second gave Covenant a 53-37 lead. 

Covenant hit 10-of-16 3-pointers in the first half and shot 55.6 percent overall in the period.

In the second half, the 3-point parade continued as the Scots hit nine more. The lead hit 30 after a Nick Palmer trey made it 88-58 with 5:27 left and the final margin of 33 was the largest of the night for the Scots.

Will Portlock had nine points and five rebounds, while Patjo Twagirayezu, Ben Phelps and Allen all had nine points apiece. Bailey Spragg registered six points, five rebounds and six assists. Covenant held a 37-31 rebounding edge led by William Bryan's six boards off the bench.

Dallas (1-1) shot 48.1 percent (26-of-54) from the field, but just 3-of-14 from downtown. The Crusaders were led by 12 points apiece from Darrius Colvin and Prince Giadolor.

Covenant hosts Emory & Henry on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Barnes PE Center. The game is preceded by LaGrange and Dallas at 4 p.m.
