Marlins Race Out to 71-44 Victory over Southern Virginia

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The No. 18 ranked Virginia Wesleyan College men's basketball team raced out to an 8-3 lead and never trailed en route to a 71-44 victory over Southern Virginia University on Wednesday evening.

Virginia Wesleyan scored the first five points of the game behind a Kaelin Poe layup and Nick Doyle three-pointer. Following a made three by Kevin Walker, Corey White, Jr. converted on a traditional three-point play for the 8-3 edge.

Southern Virginia cut it to a one possession game on a David Baety layup, but would get no closer than three the entire game while playing without leading scorer Anders Jacobsen.

VWC led 21-14 with 10:28 left in the first half when a 9-1 run over the next three minutes put the Marlins up 30-15. Virginia Wesleyan maintained the double-digit gap for the remaining 27 minutes of play. Khory Moore scored five in the spurt on a trifecta and two free throws.

The Knights came out of the halftime break trailing 43-25 and looked to rally early as Justin Langford connected from range just 12 seconds into the final period. The Marlin defense locked down Southern Virginia after the three, holding the opposition scoreless over the next five minutes while jumping out to a 49-28 lead. Virginia Wesleyan caused five turnovers in that five minute span.

Walker and Cale Thornton led Southern Virginia (3-7) with 10 points each while Walker and Baety each added nine rebounds.

Moore finished with a game-high 26 points for Virginia Wesleyan to go along with eight rebounds and three assists. Doyle finished with 13 points while White, Jr. and Poe each tallied 10 caroms.

Virginia Wesleyan (6-4) hosts Emory University (7-3) Saturday at 2 p.m. in a non-conference match-up of regional powers.
