LEXINGTON, Va. (Dec. 29, 2015) – Despite two Sewanee men's basketball players with double-doubles, Frostburg State outlasted the Tigers, 75-70, in overtime, Tuesday, during first-day action of the Washington & Lee Holiday Tournament inside the Warner Center.
The Tigers are now 5-4 overall after starting the season at 5-1. Frostburg State improved to 2-7.
Sewanee opened the game strong. The Tigers led 6-2 after a layup and free throw by Keshonn Carter and a three by Cody Jones. After a layup by Nick Smoot, Sewanee scored the next seven points when Seth Brown, Jorden Williams, and Brody Stone all kept the balanced attack going.
The Tigers maintained their advantage throughout the first half behind making 40 percent of their attempts. That included a 7-of-16 effort from beyond the three-point arc. After Frostburg State pulled to within three, 26-23, with 7:07 left in the first, Sewanee outscored the Bobcats 13-10 to end the half.
After four points from Carter and a three by Brody Stone, Sewanee stretched out its lead to 11, 46-35, with 17:18 left in regulation. A layup by James Peters briefly slowed Sewanee's momentum, however the Tigers stayed hot over the next 10 minutes. A layup by Brown sparked a 9-4 Tiger run during that stretch.
With the Tigers ahead 55-39, Frostburg State slowly chipped away at its deficit. A layup by Smoot, a three by Tyler Michael, and a two straight threes from Peters cut the Sewanee lead to 57-52 with 4:56 left in the second half.
Even after Jones pushed Sewanee ahead by six, 60-54, with 2:40 left, Frostburg State took advantage of no Tiger field goals from there. The Bobcats scored seven of the final eight points to send the game into overtime.
In the extra period, Jones made an athletic layup to start the scoring. After a three by Peters, Sewanee retook the lead when Stone hit a jumper on the Tigers' next possession. Sewanee took its last lead of the contest two possessions later when Carter pushed Sewanee ahead by three, 69-66, with 2:38 left.
Unfortunately, Peters made his seventh three of the game to tie the contest at 69-69. From there, Frostburg State made 6-of-6 free throws down the stretch to close out the game.
Sewanee had two chances to tie the game the final minute and a half, however a free throw by Jones and a jumper by Carter both missed.
Overall, Sewanee made 40.0 percent of its shots. Tuesday marked the third straight game Sewanee has made at least 40 percent of its attempts.
Individually, Carter led Sewanee with a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double. He was joined by Clay Born, who finished with an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double. Stone just missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds while Williams finished with 13 points. Jones was also in double figures with 11 points and five boards.
Peters led Frostburg State with a game-high 27 points on 9-of-15 shooting. Smoot also played well with 18 points, seven assists, and six rebounds.
Sewanee quickly returns to action with a 2:00 p.m. contest, Wednesday, against Methodist. The Monarchs lost to host W&L, 65-58, on Tuesday.
