The Green Mountain (3-1, 0-0 NAC) victory is the first win for the Eagles over the Chargers dating back to the 1994-95 season when GMC eked out a 61-60 win and ends a nine-game losing streak during that time. The victory also marks the team's fourth consecutive win on the road this season.
GMC was led by Jared Carithers (Washington, D.C.) who hit 7-of-14 shots, including 6-of-10 three-pointers for 26 points while also grabbing seven boards and dishing out four assists. Thomas Brown (Charlottesville, Va.) tallied 20 points, five boards, six assists and four steals, while Mychal Parker (Washington, N.C.) returned after missing three games to score 15 points. Cameron Anderson (Charlottesville, Va.) scored 14 points and his four blocks kept him atop of the conference in total blocks.
Colby-Sawyer (4-1, 0-0 NAC) was led by Peter Donato's 19 points and Wol Majong's 16 points, although the pair combined to shoot just 9-of-33 from the field keeping the Chargers at 35 percent from the floor as a team. Milani Hicks posted a double-double in defeat with 13 points, 12 boards and four dimes.
Green Mountain opened up the game with a 15-4 run in the first five minutes of action with all five starters contributing. Parker's emphatic two-handed dunk off of a steal in the Chargers' backcourt extended the visitor's lead to 17-11, but the Chargers immediately stormed back and took their first lead of the game, 18-17, when Nolan Bird hit a three-pointer.
Although the teams battled back and forth for the remainder of the opening half, it was the Chargers who took a 46-40 lead into the break on the strength of a Taylor Grande shot from deep as time expired.
The Eagles outscored the hosts 13-2 to open play in the second half to retake the lead at 53-48 as Carithers scored eight during the run. GMC never looked back after taking the advantage and would lead by as many as 18 late in the game.
The Eagles will return home to do battle with NAC nemesis Thomas College on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. while the Chargers head to Lyndon on Saturday for a contest against NAC opponent Lyndon State College at 3 p.m.
***Notes – With tonight's scoring, Carithers is just 26 points away from his 1000th career point while Anderson remains 102 points away from his 1000th point milestone.
