Big Second Half Sends Men’s Hoops to Victory

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team posted a strong effort on both ends of the floor Saturday night to defeat Finlandia (Mich.) 80-52 in a non-conference contest at Kachel Gymnasium.

 

The Warhawks (2-1 overall) tallied 51 points and shot 55.6 percent from the floor in the second half, and knocked down seven 3-pointers in the period. The team held Finlandia to 27.4 percent shooting for the contest.

 

Senior guard Trinson White and junior guard Ethan Guske each finished with 14 points to lead all scorers. White also led UW-Whitewater with six rebounds and three steals.

 

Junior guard Drew Bryson and freshman guard Andre Brown registered 10 points apiece. Brown, junior forwards Shaquille Francis and Cole Van Schyndel grabbed five rebounds apiece.

 

The Lions (0-3) led 11-4 through the first six minutes of play, hitting three consecutive 3-pointers after the Warhawks had taken a 4-2 advantage.

 

UW-Whitewater took the lead for good at the 9:03 mark of the first half on a layup by Van Schyndel.

 

The Warhawks' lead ballooned to nine four minutes later on a layup by White, and the team led 29-23 at the half.

 

UW-Whitewater's advantage reached double digits at 38-28 with 15:53 to play following a 3-pointer by White. The Warhawks finished a 19-0 run with 12:06 remaining on consecutive layups by Brown.

 

UW-Whitewater turned Finlandia's 21 turnovers into 25 points, and totaled 18 fast break points, including 14 in the second half. The Warhawks also held advantages on points in the paint (42-18) and bench points (26-9).

 

Following the Thanksgiving break, UW-Whitewater continues its four-game home stand against Ohio Northern next Saturday, Nov. 28, at 4 p.m.
