BROOKLINE, Mass. – Elms College junior guard Jerry Buchanon (Windsor, Conn.) launched Hail Mary three-pointer with one second on the game clock to propel the Blazers to the 68-66 victory to complete the season sweep of the Nighthawks, Tuesday evening. Buchanon finished the night with a game-high 23 points, shooting five-of-eight from beyond the arc.

The Nighthawks came out of the gate strong. Senior guard Kwame Thompson (Brockton, Mass.) connected with senior center Cameron Owen (Concord, N.H.) at the perimeter to give Newbury the four-point, 11-7, lead but the Blazers answered. Sophomore forwardConny Ihearahu (Largo, Md.) found junior guard Tim Putnam (Windsor Locks, Conn.) open outside to ignite a three-minute, 10-0 run to give Elms the 17-11 advantage.

Minutes later Ihearahu extended the Blazer lead to 10 points, 25-15, with a lay-up but the Nighthawks were able to chip away at the deficit. Senior forward David Hart (Keene, N.H.) ripped away an offensive rebound and laid it back up the easy put-back to bring the Nighthawks back within in two points at the five-minute mark.

With a minute remaining in the period and following a trey by Hart to cut the Blazer lead to six, sophomore guard Dan Horwitz (West Hartford, Conn.) picked the pocket of first year guard Keeshaun King (Jacksonville, Fla.) leading directly to as fast-break lay-up by sophomore guard Jeremiah Ephraim (Norwood, Mass.) as Elms to the 30-26 lead into the break.

When the teams emerged from the locker room, the Blazers extended their lead to nine, 35-26, before Owen drained his second trey of the game to bring it back to a two-possession game. The Nighthawks continued to hang around but midway through the half, the Blazers looked to take into another gear when sophomore forward Joshua Brunson (Springfield, Mass.) knocked down one-of-two from the charity stripe.

But it did not last long. The Nighthawk upperclassmen sparked a three-minute, 11-0 run capped off by a lay-up by Ephraim to take their first lead since early in the contest, 50-49. It became a barn-burner for the remaining of the period with the teams exchanging the lead six times as well as four ties before Buchanon drained his Hail Mary trey.

Newbury falls to 3-20 and 2-12 in the conference while Elms improves to 10-12 and 9-5 in NECC action. The Nighthawks will be back in action Thursday February 19 when they travel to Mitchell College. Tip-off's at 6:00 p.m. The Blazers will also be in action Thursday when they host Southern Vermont College at 7:00 p.m. looking to split the season series.
