Career Day by Graves Leads Hornets to 68-43 Victory over Goucher

TOWSON, MD – Junior Alex Graves led the way for the Lynchburg College men's basketball team on Sunday afternoon as the Hornets defeated Goucher College 68-43 on the road.

Graves led all scorers with 20 points and finished with double-figure rebounds for the fourth time in a Lynchburg jersey, hauling in a career-high 17 boards.

The victory moves the Hornets to 5-0 for the first time since the 1995-96 season and is the best start since the athletic department began keeping game-by-game statistics in 1981.

Lynchburg jumped out to a 20-8 start midway through the first half behind eight points from Austen Arnold. The Hornet defense continued to wreak havoc on the opposition, holding Goucher to 1-of-13 shooting from the field in the early outburst.

Goucher held the Hornet offense to just one basket after that point until Lyndon White scored on a jumper with 2:49 left in the first half to give LC a 25-19 lead.

The Gophers cut the deficit to four the next time up the court as Chris Outing drew a foul and knocked down a pair of free throws.

Daniel Rowe answered for Lynchburg with a jump shot, but Outing scored four more points to make the score 27-25 with 1:16 left until halftime. Goucher would not get any closer as Omar Kemp connected on a layup with 53 seconds to go until the break.

Lynchburg led by two, 29-27, when the second half started but scored the first 11 points to go up 13 just five minutes in. Graves had eight of his game-high total during that run.

Arnold and Zack Burnett joined Graves in double-figures with 15 and 10 points respectively while combining for 17 rebounds. Burnett also added five assists while Arnold posted four.

Outing led Goucher (0-6) with 18 points and eight rebounds while Troy DeShields contributed seven caroms.

Lynchburg outshot Goucher 42.2% to 24.5% while also hold the rebounding edge over the Gophers 54-33.

Lynchburg (5-0) hosts Randolph College (3-1) in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener for both teams Wednesday at 7 p.m.
