HAMBURG, NY – The Medaille Mavericks used a 51-point second half to secure their first victory of the season against Hilbert to kick off AMCC Conference play on Wednesday.
Jammal Coleman recorded his first double-double of the season netting (19) points and adding (11) rebounds in the victory.
The game didn't start off well for the Mavericks as they once again found themselves in an early hole. The Hawks jumped out to a 13-2 run in the first five minutes, putting the Mavs' backs against the wall right from the opening tip.
The Mavs would respond with a run of their own and tie the game minutes later. After some jostling back and forth, the Mavs would find themselves down only five heading into halftime.
While this has been familiar territory for the Mavs this season, this time the ending would be different. They played extremely well on both sides of the ball, scoring 51 points on offense and only allowing 37 points on defense in the second half.
The Mavs forced 12 Hawks turnovers and turned it into 18 points on the other end. In addition, the Mavs outscored the Hawks bench 20-12, the first time they have done that this season.
Other than Coleman, Chris Willingham also finished with (19) points while Ryan Grandits finished with (16) points.
The Mavs (1-5, 1-0) will travel to Pittsburgh, PA to play LaRoche College in their second AMCC Conference game Saturday at 2 p.m.
