Sewanee defeats Maryville for the first time since the 2005-06 season

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Dec. 4, 2013) – A pair of key shots and two defensive stops down the stretch, helped the Sewanee men's basketball team defeat in-state rival Maryville, 54-52, inside Juhan Gymnasium Wednesday.

Additionally, the victory marked the first time the Tigers have defeated the Scots since January 18, 2006.

With the win, Sewanee improved its record to 4-2 this season. Dating back to last season, the Tigers have also won nine straight games at home.

The game was tight early. Sewanee would lead by seven, 10-3, when Jorden Williams hit a deep three with 15:54 left.

After a jumper by Jaumonee Byrd, Leo Born extended the Tiger advantage with another three a possession later.

Over the next five minutes, Maryville would answer. A three by J.P. Burris sparked a 14-10 run by the Scots, which eventually tied the game at 25-25 with 5:24 to play.

After seven lead changes and two ties, Sewanee led Maryville by one, 32-31, at halftime.

In the second half, both teams would trade field goals throughout the first five minutes. Maryville would briefly take a four-point lead, 44-40, when Byrd hit a layup.

After a pair of free throws by Robert Veal and a layup by Marcellus Caldwell, both teams were knotted at 44-44 with 11:48 to play.

Over the next 10 minutes, neither team would lead by more than three points. Down 52-49 with 2:36 left, Keshonn Carter pulled Sewanee to within one with a jumper.

After a missed shot by Christian Ford, Caldwell grabbed his 10th rebound of the game with 1:47 to go.

On the ensuing possession, sophomore Seth Brown made the game-winning three off an assist by Williams.

Maryville would have two additional possessions, however a block and defensive rebound by Williams and a turnover by the Scots sealed the victory for Sewanee.

Despite 17 offensive rebounds, Maryville was hampered offensively by the Tigers' defense. Sewanee limited Maryville to a 31.3 field goal percentage.

On offense, Sewanee made 44.9 percent of its attempts. Wednesday marked the third straight game that the Tigers have made at least 40 percent of their shots.

Individually, Williams led all scorers with a game-high 17 points. Additionally, Carter and Brown each pitched in nine points.

Byrd led Maryville with a 16-point, 12-rebound double-double. Burris was the other Scot in double figures with 14 points.

Sewanee returns to action with a 4:00 p.m. (EST) contest at Boyce, Saturday.
