Crusaders Beat Albright, Earn First Conference Win

Reading, Pa. (Dec. 1, 2012) - Alvernia University (2-1, 1-1) got a double-double from Brian Parker (Chichester, Pa./Chichester), and a game-high 20 points from Kahlil Bennett(Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) as they defeated Albright College (5-1, 1-1) 74-68 this afternoon in Commonwealth Conference action at Albright. 

Alvernia held the lead through the first few minutes of play until the Lions went up 5-4 four minutes into the first half.  Albright built a three-point lead, before the Crusaders matched them at seven at 14:52, and went up 11-9 a minute later.  Neither team managed a point over the next three minutes until a three-pointer from Reuel Moore gave the Lions a 12-11 lead at 10:33.  Terrance Bridgers (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) converted a three-point play to give Alvernia two-point lead, while a dunk from Harrison Deyo(Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) and a three from Josh Vargas (Allentown, Pa./Faith Christian Academy) gave Alvernia the 19-12 lead.

The Crusaders held onto the lead through the remainder of the first half, however the Lions closed the gap to within two at 25-23 with 1:42 remaining.  At the first half buzzer,Chris Davis (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) nailed a three-pointer to put Alvernia up 28-23 heading into the half.

Alvernia built their lead to as many as ten early in the second half as Lamont Clark (Parkesburg, Pa./Octorara) converted a layup and a free throw to put Alvernia up 39-29 at 15:31.  The Crusader lead grew to 13 after a layup from Bennett, before shrinking to just five -- 50-45 at 8:44 after a three-pointer from Lion Andre Marshall.

With just a five-point lead, Alvernia went on a 12-5 run where Clark put up six points and grabbed a rebound to put Alvernia up 62-49 with five minutes left to play.  Alvernia held onto a double-digit lead until 1:39, and even then their lead never shrunk below six until the end of the game.

Parker's double-double consisted of 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Bennett led all players with 20 points.  Clark also hit double-digits with 12 points.

Alvernia is back in action on Mon. Dec. 3rd at 7:00pm when they host Lancaster Bible College in non-conference action.
