Alvernia Gets Past Pride 68-65 Crusaders Win Close One Over Widener

Chester, Pa. (Jan. 9, 2013) - Alvernia University (9-3, 4-2) defeated Widener University (4-10, 3-4) 68-65 this evening in Commonwealth Conference action.  In the Alvernia-led 33-29 first half, Harrison Deyo (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville Area) led Alvernia with 11 points, while Terrance Bridgers (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) led all scorers with 17 on the night.

The first half was tight from the beginning moments as no team led by more than six points through the entire first half.  It was Widener who stretched their lead to six at 13:52 after a three-pointer, but Alvernia answered, scoring seven of the next eight points to tie the game 13-13 at 11:21 on a layup from Lamont Clark (Parkesburg, Pa./Octorara).  They game would be tied three more times before Alvernia got a layup from Deyo and a three from Kahlil Bennett (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) to put Alvernia up 33-29 at halftime.

Although just a close as the first half, Alvernia didn't relinquish their lead, even for a moment in the second half.  In fact, they built their lead to as much as ten twice, once with four minutes left after two free throws from Bennett.  Widener kept it close, as close as two points multiple times in the second half.  A layup from the Pride with 40 seconds remaining brought the score to within two, 65-63 before Alvernia connected for three free throws to put the game just out of reach.

The Crusaders are back in action Jan. 12th when they travel to Elizabethtown for another Commonwealth Conference game.
