Frederick, Md. (Jan. 21, 2013) – Junior guard Chris Davis (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) scored a career-high 17 points and all five starters reached double figures as Alvernia University (13-3, 8-2) defeated Hood College (10-7, 4-6) by a 74-64 final Monday evening in Commonwealth Conference men's basketball action at BB&T Arena.

The win moves the first-place Crusaders a full game ahead of second place Albright in the Commonwealth standings and gives Alvernia seven straight conference wins after starting the league schedule 1-2.

Davis hit his only 3 of the night in a huge spot doubling the Crusaders lead with under four minutes to play then hit two free throws for an 8-point lead with 2:38 to go.  Davis finished the night 8-for-10 from the free throw line.

Alvernia had enjoyed a 13-point lead with 12 minutes to play, but a 12-2 run from Hood over a seven minutes span cut the lead down to just three points, 59-56 with 5:45 to go.

Davis missed a 3 on the next possession, but converted a steal into a layup to go up five.  Hood answered with a bucket at the other end to cut it back to three, but Davis connected from long range late in the shot clock to push the lead to six points, 64-58 at 3:53.

Kahlil Bennett (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) scored 14 points, Brian Parker (Chichester, Pa./Chichester) and Lamont Clark (Parkesburg, Pa./Octorara) scored 13 points apiece and Terrance Bridgers (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) finished with 10.  The Crusaders got seven points off the bench.

Bennett, the team's leading threat from the arc, entered the game hitting just five of his last 20 3-point attempts, but stepped up and buried his first look on the Crusaders' opening possession.  After a long-range miss from the Blazers at the other end, Davis scored on a layup for an early 5-point lead.

The lead hit a dozen, 21-9, on a 3-point play from Parker who scored 11 of the first 21 for the Crusaders.  Hood pulled to within five points, 31-26 on a 3 from Matt Galloway, but Alvernia scored 11 of the last 17 points of the half for a 42-32 lead at the break.

Bridgers hit his second 3 of the night on the Crusaders first possession of the second half and the lead stayed between eight and 12 points until a Bridgers free throw pushed it to 13 preceding the Hood run.

The Blazers had two players reach double digits led by Justin Bowens who totaled a game-high 18.

With all 10 teams in the league now having played the first 10 of 18 games the Crusaders have the 1-game lead over Albright and a 2-game lead over three teams tied for third (Arcadia, Lycoming, and Messiah).  Hood and Lebanon Valley are tied for sixth at 4-6 and three teams are tied for eighth at 3-7.

Alvernia returns home to host Lycoming College on Wednesday, one of the two teams to beat the Crusaders the first time through the schedule.
