Reading, Pa. (Dec. 20, 2012) – Junior forward Brian Parker (Chichester, Pa./Chichester) scored a career-high 23 points to lead Alvernia University (7-2) to a 72-63 win over Richard Stockton (9-2) Thursday evening in non-conference men's basketball action at the Physical Education Center.

Parker scored nine of the first 11 points for the Crusaders, finished the game 9-of-13 from the floor, and pulled down 12 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season.

The Crusaders held Stockton to 22 points in the first half while pouring in 41 of their own.  It's the third straight game they have held an opponent to 25 points of fewer in the opening half and the third straight halftime lead of at least 18 points.

Stockton trimmed the second-half lead down to just six points with a minute to play and put up three 3s in one possession that could have cut the gap to four, but sophomoreLamont Clark (Parkesburg, Pa./Octorara) blocked the final attempt, took the rebound, and hit a pair of free throws to close the scoring.

The Crusaders opened up an early 11-4 lead aided by Parker's first nine.  The first-half lead hit double-digits for the first time when Chris Davis (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) banked in a 3 near the end of the shot clock for a 16-6 lead with 9:55 to play.

Stockton took a 30-second timeout to talk it over and Davis picked the pocket of Carlton Whitehead just after the stoppage and converted an uncontested layup for a 12-point lead.  The gap hit 18 on a pair of Parker free throws with 6:33 to play and the Osprey finally reached double digits on a layup from Kevin Johnson with 6:23 left in the half.

Junior guard Kahlil Bennett (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) hit 3s on either ends of a 14-5 run the Crusaders closed the half with for the 19-point lead at the break.  Bennett led all scorers with 15 points in the first half and finished with 18.

The second half lead was 14 points on four different occasions then down to nine points, 58-49 on a Kevin Johnson layup.  Parker answered that at the other end and added a free throw on the next possession for a 12-point lead, but Stockton came back with six of the next eight to trim the gap to eight points, 63-55 with 2:08 to play.

Alvernia broke the press easily on the inbounds and Clark fed Parker for a two-handed slam and a 10-point edge.  Parker's tip-in the next time down the floor kept the lead at 10, and the Crusaders were able to hold off the Ospreys' final effort.

Clark was the third Crusader to reach double figures with 13 points.  Stockton also had three players reach double digits led by Rameel Johnson with 13.

Parker's previous high was 15 points which he reached three times including twice earlier this season in wins over Gwynedd-Mercy and Albright.

Alvernia heads into the Christmas break on a four-game win streak and will travel to NYU the day after New Year's for a non-conference game.
