No. 21 Captains Fall to Va. Wesleyan, 79-66, for Second Straight Loss

NEWPORT NEWS, Va- The three-point shooting of Virginia Wesleyan proved to be too much for the Captains of Christopher Newport Monday night. The Marlins knocked down 12 of 23 three-pointers, including nine of 13 in the opening half, and cruised to a 79-66 non-conference victory. A crowd of 1,487 watched the action at the Freeman Center.

Virginia Wesleyan used the long balls to open up a 15 point lead at the half, 47-32. The Captains only managed to cut the lead as close as 11 in the second half as the Marlins improved to 15-6 on the season.

CNU struggled from the field, shooting just 30 percent from the floor in the first half and 38 percent for the game. For John Krikorian's squad, it was the second straight loss and the Captains fell to 15-4 with the defeat.

Virginia Wesleyan's Chris Astorga (17 points), D.J. Woodmore (13 points and 12 rebounds), Tre Ford (15 points), and Colby Heard (16 points off the bench) led the way.

The Captains also had four in double figures led by Mike Cherry's 15 points. Nik Biberaj (14 points), Evan Thorpe (13 points and 13 rebounds), and Tra Benefield (12 points) paced CNU.

Christopher Newport returns to USA South play on Saturday, travelling to Georgia to play LaGrange. Game time is set for 4 p.m.

The Captains are atop the USA South with an 8-2 conference record, one game ahead of Ferrum.
