The Newbury College men's basketball team defeated Daniel Webster College, 60-48, in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action, Thursday evening. Senior center Peterson Bernard (Boston, Mass.) registered his 12th double-double of the season, ripping down a game-high 16 rebounds while being one of three Nighthawks in double-figures, netting 13 points.

Junior guard Eric Watson (New Rochelle, N.Y.) set the tone of the game early, opening up with a trey before dishing the rock to Bernard in the low-post to give the Nighthawks the quick 5-0 advantage two-minutes into the contest. Daniel Webster first year guard Ryan Gauthier (Nashua, N.H.) answered a minute later knocking down a three-point jumper to knot up the score at five and make it a brand new ball-game. But it did not last for long as the Nighthawks jumped back on top.

Midway through the half, Bernard sparked a two-minute 9-0 run with a huge offensive board. Junior guard Steve Rosemond (Everett, Mass.), who led the offensive with 11 points, registered seven of the Nighthawks' nine points in two minutes to give Newbury their largest lead of the half, 22-10.

Daniel Webster was not going away quietly and answered with a two-minute run of their own. Eagles sophomore guard Jose Allen (Amherst, Mass.) knocked down a lay-up to ignite a 10-2 Eagles run and cut the deficit to just four points. But that was as close as Newbury went into the locker room with a five-point, 27-22 lead.

When the teams returned to the court at the start of the second half, the Eagles continued to hang around the Nighthawks, cutting the deficit to one four times before Newbury finally started to pull away. Midway through the half, Watson found a wide open Rosemond at the perimeter to kick-start an 11-0 run, lasting just under three minutes to grab the 12-point, 46-34 lead.

Daniel Webster tried valiantly to scratch and claw their way back following Gauthier's second trey of the game to cut the Newbury lead back down to single digits. However, it was not enough. Senior guard Tim Young (Brockton, Mass.) sealed the Nighthawks 12th victory of the season netting a mid-range jumper from Rosemond with 2:25 remaining in the half to give Newbury a 16-point cushion and cruised to the 12-point victory.

Rosemond and Young led the Nighthawks with a game-high 14 points each while junior guard Kwame Thompson (Brockton, Mass.) continued to prove to be the sparkplug off the bench notching eight points. Bernard rounded out the Nighthawks in double figures tallying 13 points.

Gauthier was the lone Eagle in double digits, tallying 10 points while senior forward John Hickson (Springfield, Mass.) dished out a game-high four assists in the loss.

Newbury keeps pace with Elms College improving to 10-1 in the conference and 12-8 overall while Daniel Webster falls to 8-12 and 4-7 in the NECC. The Nighthawks return to action Tuesday February 5th on the road against nearby Wheelock College at 7:30 p.m. The Eagles return to hard-court on Saturday February 2nd when they host Wheelock at 3:00 p.m.

The Nighthawks have won the last three meetings against the Eagles – including a 65-51 upset victory in last year's NECC Quarterfinals on February 21, 2012 – and improve to 9-7 all-time against Daniel Webster.
