Washington, D.C. – The No. 12 St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team picked up their third consecutive win Wednesday night with a 63-47 non-conference victory over host Gallaudet University. The Seahawk trio of guards Brendan McFall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) and Devin Spencer (Baltimore, Md./Towson Catholic) and first-year forward Troy Spurrier (Mt. Airy, Md./Glenelg) all scored in double digits in the win.
McFall tallied 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting, including a career-high three-pointers, while hauling in a team-best seven rebounds. Spencer added 10 points, three assists and two steals for St. Mary's. Spurrier led the Seahawks' solid effort off the bench with season-highs 13 points, four boards and two steals in 19 minutes. He was nearly perfect on the night, going 6-of-7 from the field.
St. Mary's (17-2) dominated Gallaudet inside by a 36-12 margin, including six points off of fast breaks. The Seahawk defense was up on its game as well, forcing 26 Bison turnovers that led to 25 points on the offensive end.
McFall netted 13 of his 15 points in the first half, helping the Seahawks own a 32-24 halftime advantage. The Bison (9-11) opened up with a 5-0 run and then extended their lead to 17-8 at 11:13 following back-to-back three-pointers by senior guard Layton Seeber (Champaign, Ill.).
St. Mary's responded with a 10-0 run that included consecutive long-range bombs by McFall as the Seahawks staked their first lead of the game at 7:54. The team went on to close out the half on a 24-7 tear.
Gallaudet closed the gap to three at 13:47 with a 7-2 run to start the second half. The Bison did not reclaim the lead again or get any closer for the rest of the contest as St. Mary's broke open the game with a 26-9 run to boast a 60-40 advantage with 3:16 left.
Seeber notched a game-high 24 points, including 15 in the first half, as he was 6-of-10 from downtown while junior forward Orion Palmer (Riverside, Calif.) pulled down a game-best nine caroms and added four assists.
The Seahawks will be back in action this Saturday, January 27 as St. Mary's travels to York College of Pennsylvania for a Capital Athletic Conference contest at 3:00 pm.
