SALEM, Va. -- Roanoke College's Maroons were well on their way to a major upset in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference on Saturday with a 62-44 lead and 12:44 remaining in the game. But, in the next nine minutes the league-leading Virginia Wesleyan College Marlins changed the direction of the game. With 3:13 to play, the Marlins tied the game, outscoring the Maroons 31-13 before a partisan crowd of 1,568 at Roanoke's C. Homer Bast Center. Senior Chris Teasley (Newport News/Menchville) added to the Marlins' roll with a layup that gave VWC its first lead since the first half. The Maroons came back to tie the score twice the ensuing possessions, but Teasley hit two free throws with 1:28 remaining to give Virginia Wesleyan the lead for good. The Marlins outscored Roanoke 10-3 there after and completed the impressive comeback for an 89-82 victory. It was the fifth consecutive victory for Virginia Wesleyan, which improve to 8-0 in the ODAC and to 12-4 overall. Roanoke fell to 0-8 in the league and 7-10 overall. Roanoke trailed the Marlins 23-20 late in the first half, but came on strong in the final minutes to take a 36-30 lead at halftime. A score by Daniel Eacho (Richmond/Monacan) followed by a triple from Jordan Thacker (Waynesboro/Stuarts Draft) helped keep momemtum with Roanoke early in the second half and the Maroons continued to make the big shots en route to opening up the 62-44 lead with 12:44 on the clock. But, a Teasley free throw at the 12:30 mark started to turn things in favor of the Marlins, who rode momentum the rest of the way. Five Marlins scored in double figures led by Teasley and Tre' Ford (Falls Church/J.E.B. Stuart) with 19 points each. Junior DJ Woodmore (Virginia Beach/Landstown) added 18 points, Chris Astorga (Suffolk/Virginia Beach Cape Henry Collegiate) scored 12 and junior Trent Batson (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) finished with10. Virginia Wesleyan hit only 34% of its field goal attempts in the first half, but improved that mark to 50% in the second half. Free throw shooting became a key factor for the Marlins, who hit 29-of-38 attempts, while Roanoke canned 17-of-25. Scoring off turnovers also benefitted VWC, which tallied 23 points off 19 Roanoke miscues. Virginia Wesleyan turned the ball over only 10 times. Julian Ramirez (Palymra/Fork Union) led Roanoke scoring with 22 points, followed by Kwasi Amponsah (Woodridge/Garfield) with 21 points.
