More news about: N.C. Wesleyan

Rocky Mount, N.C. - Freshman Eric Dortch-Jones made the most of his first two career points, tipping in the gamewinning bucket as time expired to give his Bishops a thrilling 77-76 victory over 25th-ranked Hampden-Sydney on Wednesday afternoon in Everett Gym. The win secured a 2-0 showing for Wesleyan at the 2012 South Region Challenge and gives NCWC a perfect 3-0 record on the season.

The Bishops shot nearly 60 percent in the first half en route to a 41-35 lead at the break. They went on to lead by as many as 10 points on three occasions in the second half, only to see the Tigers battle back to knot the game at 60-60 with 8:39 remaining.

From that point on, the game would feature seven lead changes, including four in the final minute. A Cam Anderson offensive rebound at put-back gave H-SC a 74-73 lead with 49 seconds remaining, but Wesleyan answered with a Josh Morrison drive and lay-up just 26 seconds later for a 75-74 Bishop advantage. H-SC's Harrison George proceeded to put his team back on top with a basket in the paint with 10 ticks left.

With fouls to give, the Tigers elected to twice foul the Bishops as they moved the ball up court, leaving Wesleyan with just four seconds to get a shot off. Morrison took the in-bounds pass and drove up the left side of the lane for a short jumper that bounced long off the right side of the rim. Dortch-Jones was there waiting for the offensive rebound and tip-in, igniting a Bishop celebration under their basket and leaving the nationally-ranked Tigers stunned.

Overall, the game featured 12 lead changes and six ties. Bishop senior Brandon Givens, who set a new NCWC single-game record for points with 43 on Tuesday, poured in a game-high 28 on Wednesday. He was joined in double-figures by Cornelius Snow with 19 points on 4-of-5 shooting from downtown. Sophomore Chris Ford added 12 points, while Morrison had 11 points and six assists.

For the Tigers, Anderson was one of three players with 14 points on the day.
