The No. 11-ranked Tommies (3-0) sank 17-of-19 free throws and had only six turnovers in Tuesday's 75-62 men's basketball win over visiting UW-River Falls (1-2) in St. Paul.
The Falcons led 28-22 but an 11-0 run put the Toms ahead to stay. After UST built a 46-36 halftime lead, the Falcons got within six points at 60-54. Another late 11-0 run by UST pushed the lead to 71-54.
For St. Thomas, Will DeBerg had 12 points, Tommy Hannon had 12 points and eight rebounds, and John Nance had 11 points. The Toms had a 37-27 rebounding advantage and a 32-15 margin in bench points.
Arik Smith had a game-high 18 points to lead three Falcon players scoring in double figures. UWRF had one more field goal but was outscored 17-3 at the foul line.
