BUFFALO, NY - The Medaille College men's basketball team held on just long enough to squeak out an (83-82) win over AMCC foe D'Youville College this evening in the Sullivan Center.
The teams were locked in a back and forth battle in the early stages of the game with D'Youville grabbing a five point lead with (5:47) remaining in the first. It was a half that saw ten ties and six lead changes. However, the Mavs closed out the half with a (19-2) run, seizing control heading into the break with a (41-29) lead.
The Mavs began the second half much like they ended the first as their lead swelled to (60-39) with (12:50) remaining. The teams would trade buckets over the next seven minutes before the Spartans went on their run which consisted of five late three pointers, including one at the buzzer that put them one point shy of tying the game.
The Mavs contiued to share the basketball and used balanced scoring to lead them their tenth straight win. Leading the way was Sean Bellomo who came off the bench to tally a team high (12) points, (8) rebounds, and (2) blocked shots. Also coming off the bench to play a huge role was Jammal Coleman who netted (11) points, including a thunderous dunk in transition that got the partisan crowd riled up at the end of the opening half.
The Mavs starters were led by David Shuey who chipped in with (11) points of his own while grabbing six rebounds and Angel Flores netted (10) points and dished out a team best five assists. Knocking down three shots from long range was Tyler Stevens who finished with (9) points. The most improtant of those three pointers came with (1:08) remaining in the game that stretched the Medaille lead to seven points.
The Spartans edged the Mavs in points in the paint, second chance points, and points off turnovers. However, Medaille tallied (16) points on fast breaks and the Mavs reserves outscored the D'Youville bench (38-11), which has become a norm for the deep Mavericks.
The win keeps Medaille unbeaten at home with a (12-0) mark on their home hardwood. They have won ten straight and stand at (22-2) overall and are (16-1) in AMCC play as they head into their final regular season game this Saturday (2/18) at 1:00pm versus La Roche on "Senior Day" in the Sullivan Center. The (22) victories are the second most in program history, second only to the (24) wins the Mavs amassed in the 2009-10 season.
