Hipp surpasses Vern Mikkelsen's career point total as Pipers win at Augsburg

More news about: Hamline

Senior center Carl Hipp (Little Canada, Minn.) moved up to sixth on Hamline's all-time scoring list, passing NBA hall of famer Vern Mikkelsen, as the Hamline University men's basketball team won a 74-66 victory at Augsburg College.

Hipp entered the game just 12 points shy of Mikkelsen's 1,415 career points, which was sixth all-time prior to tonight. Hipp totaled 18 points as part of a double-double (adding 11 rebounds). He now stands at 1,421 career points.

The Pipers trailed through the first 10 minutes of play, taking their first lead, 18-17, at 9:41 on a jumper by Josh Pratt (Fy., Roseville, Minn.).

The Auggies would tie the score up three times before the end of the half, but Hamline went into the locker room with a three-point lead, 36-33.

In the second half, Augsburg opened with a layup from Cory Polta and a jumper from Parker Hines that gave the hosts a one-point lead, 37-36.

The teams exchanged one- and two-point leads until five minutes remained in the game. At that point, Mike Campbell (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) twice hit a pair of free throws, sandwiched one Auggie point from the charity stripe, that ignited a 10-1 run.

That stretch gave Hamline a nine-point lead, 70-61, with 90 seconds to play.

And that would be all the cushion that the Pipers would need, as they went on to win by eight, 74-66.

Campbell led the Pipers in scoring with 20 points and was a rebound shy of a double-double. Hipp had the 18 points and 11 rebounds while Pratt finished with 11 points.

Augsburg was led by a pair of double-doubles. Andy Grzesiak-Grimm had 13 points and 10 rebounds while Polta tallied 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Hamline's record is now 10-8, 8-5 MIAC while Augsburg is 12-8, 7-7 MIAC. The Pipers return home to Hutton Arena to host Gustavus Adolphus on Wednesday, February 2, at 7:30 p.m.
