Wilkes-Barre, PA (January 19, 2011) – A 14-2 run to end the first half helped the DeSales University men's basketball team build an 18-point halftime edge and the Bulldogs never looked back in a convincing 89-57 road win over Wilkes University on Wednesday evening in Freedom Conference action.
Sophomore Brett Moyer and senior Brian Hunter combined to score 39 points as the only double digit scorers in an offensive attack that saw 13 of the 14 players in uniform reach the scoring column. Moyer led the way with 21, while Hunter added a team-high five assists to his 18 points.
Freshman Mike Coleman added nine points and four assists off the bench, sophomore Brian Kerwin totaled eight points, freshman Matt Poorman finished with seven points, and sophomore Greg Peters gave DSU some good minutes off the bench as well with six points. Freshman Paul Pammer and junior Tom Marshall led the charge on the boards with six each.
Paul Huch led the Colonels with 13 points and Kendall Hinze totaled 11 points and nine rebounds in the loss. Leading scorer Chris DeRojas scored just nine points on 4-of-13 shooting.
With the game tied at 10, two Peters foul shots and a three from Poorman gave the Bulldogs a 15-10 lead that they never relinquished. The game was back-and-forth over the next six minutes before DSU used a 14-2 run starting at the 5:25 mark to end the half extending a 28-22 lead into a 42-24 halftime score.
Moyer scored the first five points of the spurt and Hunter provided the exclamation point with a running three-pointer from six feet outside the arc as the buzzer sounded.
In the second half Wilkes scored the first bucket of the half and that was the closest it got (16 points) as the DeSales lead peaked at 32 points twice including the final score.
The win is the 12th straight and the 14th in the last 15 games for the Bulldogs in the series between the two teams. DSU shot 47.7 percent from the field and did a sensational job taking care of the ball dishing out 23 assists as compared to just nine turnovers for the game. DeSales also forced Wilkes into 18 turnovers on the other end and had a 41-36 advantage on the glass.
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday when they make a return trip to Wilkes-Barre, PA to take on King's College in another important Freedom Conference road contest beginning at 3:00 pm.
