GEORGETOWN, Texas (Jan. 7) -- Southwestern University jumped out to a 17-2 lead after just five minutes of action and never looked back, leading by at least 10 points the rest of the way for a 88-68 victory over Hendrix College on Friday evening at the Corbin J. Robertson Center.
The Pirates (4-9, 2-2 SCAC) out-rebounded the Warriors(4-8, 0-4 SCAC), 42-29, and also owned a 28-17 advantage from the charity stripe. Southwestern out-scored Hendrix 24-16 in the paint and added a 15-5 advantage off turnovers.
The Pirates eventually reached an 18-point advantage (44-26) with 30 ticks left on the clock in the opening half, until Warriors' sophomore Jaren Riley knocked down a 3-pointer as time expired. Southwestern led 44-29 at the break.
The Pirates reached a game-high 24-point lead (56-32) with 15:37 left in regulation on a free throw from senior Robert Hanley. Hendrix would get as close as 13 points the rest of the way on a jumper from Riley with 4:27 to go.
The Pirates had four players score in double digits. Seniors Nick Caputo and Jonathan Brown led the way with 20 points apiece, while Hanley and junior Logan Hurley scored 13 and 12 points, respectively. First year Michael Cantu added nine points and a game-high seven assists.
Riley led Hendrix with a career-high performance at 22 points. He was 6-of-9 from the field, including 3-of-5 from behind the arc and 7-of-9 from the free throw line. Senior Dane Nielsen and junior Chris Goodman added 10 points apiece.
The Warriors fall to 14-22 all-time against Southwestern. Hendrix will now travel to San Antonio, Texas to take on SCAC foe Trinity University on Saturday, Jan. 8 at 8 p.m. CT.
