Warhawks Top Pioneers at the Line

More news about: UW-Whitewater

It was all on the line.  UW-Whitewater used both lines, the three point arc and the free throw line to defeat Carroll University

The weather outside was cold, and so was the shooting.  It took almost three minutes before the scoreboard registered anything, witih UW-W's Chris Davis breaking the ice (almost literally) with a driving layin. Phil Negri hit a pair of free throws at 14:42 to make it 8-5 Whitewater, and that was followed by six more Warhawk points to put UW-W up 14-5.  Whitewater led 20-9 at 11:26, but by the time Carroll's Mitch Tordoff hit a three pointer the lead was down to 21-19 with 7:23 left in the half.  UW-W hit three three-pointers in the last 2:42 of the half to take a 37-30 lead into the lockerroom.

An Alex Edmunds layup at 16:26 of the second half gave UW-W a 44-33 lead, and the margin was never less than double figures the rest of the way.  Whitewater's bulge grew to 67-43 on another Edmunds layup with 5:33 remaining, and the Warhawks put in in cruise control the rest of the way.

And about those lines.  Whitewater shot 9-19 (47%) from beyond the arc, outscoring Carroll (4-15) by 15 from long range, and making 18-23 free throws while the Pioneers went 10-16, another eight point advantage.

Freshman guard Cody Odegaard scored a season high 14 points, and he was joined by senior point guard Phil Negri and junior center Davis, also 14.  Sophomore guard Antone Byrd added 13 to the balanced attack.  Davis recorded a double double, with a game high ten rebounds, and Negri dished out five assists.

The Pioneers were led by sophomore forward Dan Kratz, who scored 11.  Senior forward Paul Grossheusch, who came in to the game averaging 14.4 points and 9.4 points, was limited to one point and two rebounds before fouling out.

UW-W is 6-4 overall, and Carroll is 4-4.

UW-W has a break from competition until December 30, when Hamline University will visit Kachel Gym in Williams Center for a 7:00 tipoff.
