DOVER, Del. - A slicing, spinning layup by Rudy Thomas (Milton, Del./Sussex Tech) with 8:51 to play started a 16-2 Wesley College run and propelled the Wolverines to a 74-63 win over Stevenson in Capital Athletic Conference play.
Wesley (4-4, 2-1 CAC) trailed 51-50 after a basket by Greg Woody, but on the Mustangs (3-6, 1-3 CAC) next possession, Thomas stole the ball from Woody, slid into the paint and spun for a go ahead layup.
Paul Reynolds (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) scored six straight points in the middle of the run as Wesley extended its lead to 67-53.
Darrell Johnson (New Castle, Del./Howard) led four Wesley players in double figures with 19 points. Chris Douglas (Landover, Md./Jericho Prep Academy) went 7-of-12 from the floor for 15 points, while Kevin Johnson (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) and Reynolds each finished with a dozen.
Jamal Wilson (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) came off the bench for nine points and team-high eight boards.
The Wolverines shot exactly 50 percent in the game (29-of-58) and limited the Mustangs to just 34 percent.
Andrew Bishop had a double-double for Stevenson with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Woody and Danny Murphy contributed 13 points apiece.
Kevin Johnson scored the game's first five points as Wesley jumped ahead early, 10-3. Wesley stretched its lead to 11 after a fastbreak duece by Darrell Johnson, but the Mustangs cut it to 31-29 after a Woody bucket with 2:00 to play in the half.
The Wolverines got baskets from both Johnsons down the stretch to make it a six point lead at the half.
Wesley is off until heading to the Holiday Inn Captains Shootout at Christopher Newport on December 29-30.
