First round: C's the moment

So much for a rematch between Bowdoin and Tufts next weekend. Castleton State upset Bowdoin on opening night of the 2014 Division III basketball NCAA Tournament.

Bowdoin led Castleton 31-23 at the half before the Spartans seized control with a 17-2 run to start the second half. Kristen Prue hit a three-pointer with 11 seconds left to pull Bowdoin within one, but Jade Desroches hit enough free throws down the stretch to give the Spartans the win, 64-62. Desroches scored 32 points in a full 40 minutes for Castleton. The Spartans' win is the first for a team from the North Atlantic Conference in at least 11 years.

Castleton will Plattsburgh State, which beat Roger Williams 67-56 in its NCAA tournament debut. Tournament rookie Haverford surged past Rhode Island College 53-48. Tomorrow night the Fords play host Ithaca which held Sage to nine second-half points in a 67-30 victory.

Amber Keys notched a double-double against Moravian and Cabrini notched its first NCAA tournament victory, 76-61. Keys had 22 points and 11 rebounds for the Cavaliers who held the Greyhounds to 30 percent shooting. Cabrini plays Montclair State in the second round since the Redhawks handled Regis, 76-61.

The third trip to the NCAA tournament was the charm for Vassar senior guard Cydni Matsuoka. The All-American scored a season-high 31 points, including 19 in the second half, as the Brewers defeated Williams, 76-75. "I'm really proud of this group and of how this team played today," said head coach Candice Brown. "We really persevered and it feels great to get this win for this group of seniors and for the entire team."

Hartwick picked up its first NCAA Tournament win in similarly dramatic fashion. The Hawks nipped Baruch 80-77 in overtime, setting up a second round matchup with national power Amherst. Brittany Dumas had 34 points and 15 rebounds for Hartwick.

Kelly Coleman scored 32 points in 40 minutes for the University of New England which edged New York University, 80-77. Kaitlyn Read scored seven points for the Violets in the final minute. The Nor'easters play host Tufts tomorrow. The Jumbos overpowered St. Joseph's (Maine) 66-43 and set a new program mark for wins in a season (27).

The WIAC won both first round games against MIAC opponents. UW-Oshkosh used an 8-0 run to pull away from St. Mary's (Minn.), 71-61. UW-Whitewater beat Concordia-Moorhead 79-72 as Keri Carollo became the school's winningest coach.

Transylvania topped Ohio Northern 79-71 to pick up the HCAC's second tournament win in the last 10 years. The Pioneers play DePauw tomorrow after the Tigers took care of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 79-68.

One week after Whitworth upset Whitman in the NWC tournament final, the teams will meet again in the NCAA Tournament. The Pirates dominated George Fox in the second half and cruised to a 71-51 win. Kayla Johnson paired 27 points with 10 rebounds for Whitworth. Whitman rolled over Chapman, 106-51.
