The Bowdoin athletic department has announced the hiring of Alex Lloyd as the head coach of the Polar Bear men's basketball team.

Named as the eighth coach in the history of the program, and just the third in the past 58 years, Lloyd has an extensive coaching background at both the collegiate and professional levels. Most recently, he has been the lead assistant coach for the Memphis Hustle, the G-League affiliate of the Memphis Grizzlies, since 2018.

"I am thrilled to welcome Alex and his family to the Bowdoin community," said athletic director Tim Ryan. "It was evident throughout our search process that Alex has a passion for supporting our students, both on and off the court, through their college experience and an eagerness to be engaged within our campus community. I am excited to introduce Alex to the Bowdoin community as he and his family transition to Maine this summer."

"I'd like to thank Tim Ryan, President Rose, and the entire committee for the opportunity to be the next head coach for Bowdoin men's basketball," said Lloyd. "It is incredibly humbling to be joining this special community. I'm excited to build on the foundation left by Coach (Tim) Gilbride as we pursue excellence on and off the court."

Gilbride announced his retirement in early April.

Lloyd played his college ball at Pomona-Pitzer where he enjoyed a decorated career that included being named the 2005 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year. Following a year in basketball operations for the San Antonio Spurs, Lloyd earned his master's in education from Smith in 2008 before returning to work for the Spurs as an assistant coach for their Summer League team in 2009-10 while also gaining experience as an assistant for the Austin Toros (G-League affiliate for the Spurs). After transitioning to various roles in the Atlanta Hawks organization from 2012-14, he returned to the college ranks, working from 2014-18 at Texas A&M, where he was elevated to director of scouting and player development.

His most recent role with the Memphis Grizzlies organization began in 2018, when he helped lead the Grizzlies to the Las Vegas Summer League championship. As an assistant for the Hustle, he helped six players achieve NBA callups and was part of the franchise's first playoff appearance and victory.

A native of Burlington, Vt., Lloyd and his wife Rachel have a 1-year-old daughter, Nalia.
